More than 80 hectares of new nature conservation areas in Vantaa
At its meeting on 26 January, the City of Vantaa Board decided to apply for protection of Ladaunmetsä forest, Syväojanmetsä forest, the Lamminsuo expansion area, and the Palokallio expansion area as new nature conservation areas. In addition, the draft amendments to the detailed plans for Veromies Teknobulevardi and Rälssitie, as well as for Ojangon and Länsisalmi, were decided to be made available for public review.
Palokallion luonnonsuojelualueen laajennus olisi kolmen hehtaarin kokoinen metsäalue. Alueella on luonnontilaisen kaltaista, iäkästä puustoa sekä varttunutta kuivahkon kankaan metsää.
The City of Vantaa Environmental Centre has mapped out options for new nature conservation areas in Vantaa. The City Board decided to apply for protection under the Nature Conservation Act for Ladaunmetsä forest, Syväojanmetsä forest, the Lamminsuo expansion area, and the Palokallio expansion area from the Uusimaa Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment (ELY Centre).
The total area of the sites to be protected is approximately 80.9 hectares.
- Ladaunmetsä is a diverse forest area featuring various types of dry heath forests, groves, and swamp forests. Its birdlife is particularly significant in the Vantaa context. The plant species in the moist groves include species that are rare in Vantaa. The Ladaunmetsä nature reserve is located in the middle of a Natura 2000 area consisting of several separate sections.
- Syväojanmetsä contains several endangered habitat types and includes valuable small water features such as two near-natural streams and two natural brooks. The forest is valuable for birdlife and hosts abundant occurrences of the critically endangered fen orchid moss. Based on both species and habitat types, Syväojanmetsä meets the criteria for a regionally valuable site.
- The expansion area of the Lamminsuo nature reserve includes several species that are rare and scarce in Vantaa, such as the Siberian flying squirrel. The expansion will increase the area of the reserve to nearly 32 hectares.
- The Palokallio expansion is a diverse forest area of about three hectares. It includes near-natural pine-dominated rocky forest with old tree stands and mature dry heath forest. The area also features valuable small water habitats such as a natural brook and serves as a significant core area for fen orchid moss.
Jobs and homes in Veromies – Vantaa Energy’s waste-to-energy plant to be expanded in Ojangon
The City Board decided to make available for public review the draft amendments to the detailed plans for Veromies Teknobulevardi, Rälssitie, and Ojangon.
The amendment for Teknobulevardi in Veromies enables the construction of workplace blocks, a street, and a bridge between Lentoasemantie and Teknobulevardi.
The amendment for Rälssitie in Veromies enables the construction of two new apartment block complexes along Rälssitie next to the Annefred tram stop. The blocks will provide housing for approximately 360 residents as well as office, commercial, and service spaces. The area will be developed into a pleasant, walkable urban block district forming part of the new Annefred centre.
The amendment for the detailed plans in Ojangon and Länsisalmi expands Vantaa Energy Ltd’s waste-to-energy plant and plot in Ojangon. The company has applied for a plan amendment to allow the construction of a carbon capture facility and a mixed waste sorting facility on the property located on Pitkäsuontie.
