Vantaa School League has been launched – don’t miss the basketball tournament on 13 January 2024

The Vantaa School League, launched last autumn, includes 230 third graders from across the city. In January, the teams will compete in basketball.

The Vantaa School League and Tempo Orchestra invite residents of all ages in Vantaa to a fun basketball event on Saturday, 13 January 2024, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Energia Areena, Myyrmäki. The event is open to all and free of charge and promises the excitement of a major sports event as teams from five Vantaa schools compete against each other. Tempo Orchestra will open the event with a performance by 130 musicians, and Tempo's team will also participate in the tournament.

‘We’re happy to organise the event as a joint effort. Our goals are the same: providing easily accessible recreational activities for primary school children and preventing social disintegration’, says the School League’s Project Coordinator, Markus Helanen, and Tempo Orchestra's Planner, Juha Ahvenainen.

Vantaa School League was launched last autumn

The pilot phase of the Vantaa School League began last autumn in the schools of Rajakylä, Lehtikuusi, Kytöpuisto, Mikkola and Uomarinne. All third-grade pupils in the schools have had the opportunity to participate in the multi-sport league.

In October, 120 participants played tag in the league’s first tournament. In the spring, dodgeball and football tournaments will also be organised in addition to basketball.

Each school taking part has one or two teams representing their school in the league’s matches. In total, the School League teams have around 230 players.

‘The children have been excited to take part in the School League. Two schools even had to establish two teams to allow everyone interested to play,’ says Project Coordinator Markus Helanen from Vantaa’s Sports and Fitness Services.

The School League is being piloted by the City of Vantaa's Sports and Fitness Services as part of the city’s regional programme of positive action (MEK). The goal is that, in the future, the league's activities will be continued independently by the different districts of Vantaa.

The city hopes that parents, siblings, grandparents and other people close to the children will become involved in supporting or organising the activities. Ways to get involved include serving as a coach or assistant coach, participating in game planning, fund-raising or joining the support team.
