Teaching for disabled students
Introduction
Due to an intellectual disability or autism, the student’s instruction is arranged in city-level special-education classes for extensive support. All students in these classes have a decision on support for student-specific support measures. In these classes, instruction is arranged in an appropriate way for the student by subject, based on syllabuses of different scopes, entirely by operating area, or a combination of these.
The objectives set for the student are recorded in the plan for the implementation of support that is created for them. The aim is to ensure the balanced overall development of the student in cooperation with teachers, staff who assist in instruction, guardians, various experts and special employees. Assistants support the student’s overall development throughout the school day, including morning and day activities. Instruction is concrete and structured, utilizes the different senses and reviews subjects.
Limiting a subject’s syllabus means that the target level set for the student’s learning is determined in accordance with the student’s capabilities. However, the objectives must be sufficiently challenging for the student. Limiting the syllabus is decided in the decision on support. The plan for the implementation of support contains separate justifications for limiting the syllabus in each subject. For each subject, it will be separately assessed whether the student can study the subject in accordance with the general syllabus or if the subject’s syllabus needs to be limited. If it later becomes necessary to increase or decrease the number of limited subjects, a new plan for the implementation of support and decision on support based on it will be made.
Instruction for students with severe intellectual disabilities can be organized by operating area rather than by subject. Arranging instruction by operating area may also be justified for an otherwise disabled or seriously ill student due to health reasons. Arranging instruction by operating area rather than by subject is decided in the decision on support. Instruction is arranged by operating area only when it is found that the student is not capable of studying by subject, even with a limited syllabus.
The operating areas are:
- motor skills
- language and communication
- social skills
- day-to-day activity skills
- cognitive skills.
