ONNI project of guidance
ONNI is an abbreviation from the Finnish words ‘ohjauksella notkeat nivelet’, which here loosely translates to ‘flexible transitions through guidance’. One of the project’s goals is to develop the guidance counselling methods that support the student’s transition from basic education to upper secondary studies. Further objectives are to strengthen the effectiveness of guidance counselling in basic education and to support, develop and reinforce the guidance counselling methods, especially intensive guidance counselling.

Vantaan perusopetuksen oppilaanohjauksen hanke ONNI on käynnistynyt 1.8.2021 ja päättyy vuoden 2022 lopussa.
Three coordinator guidance counsellors work in the project to achieve these goals. They will receive support for their work from many parties, such as the network of more than 40 guidance counsellors in City of Vantaa’s basic education and the department expert of basic education’s guidance counselling.
The coordinator guidance counsellors strive to compile guidance models for the transitional stages of basic education and upper secondary education in Vantaa, which include personal intensive guidance during basic education as well as continued intensive guidance cooperation when the young person transitions to upper secondary education. At the same time, they strive to develop cooperation with parties such as upper secondary education providers, student welfare and youth services in matters related to intensive personal guidance and support.
The project’s target group includes 8th and 9th grade students that receive intensive guidance counselling services. In order to identify and guide this group of students, the project aims to create functional models for the guidance counsellor network of the entire city’s basic education sector. The coordinator guidance counsellors’ work includes pilots of implementing the intensive guidance models in pilot student groups at schools. The coordinator guidance counsellors also reinforce basic education’s idea of the whole school being part of guidance counselling work by organising training, network meetings and information events in their own areas of responsibility.
