In Helsinki, the clanking of tram cars has been heard for over 100 years, but the first light rail line only began operating in October 2023 – and with none of the clanking.

The transverse light rail line 15, also known as the Jokeri Light Rail during its construction phase, immediately became immensely popular: in January–March 2024, it was used for nearly 3 million journeys.

The service intervals have become shorter, and the line has become one of HSL’s most used lines. Customer satisfaction is the highest among all the light rail lines: up to 97% of passengers were satisfied.

“I was there for the first light rail departure from Otaniemi. The car was so full that not everyone who wanted to join could fit inside. It was a highly desired connection from the very beginning,” says Johannes Laitila, Communications Specialist at HSL.

During the construction phase, there was naturally a lot of feedback about the Jokeri Light Rail's special arrangements, but attitudes changed quickly after the light rail line opened.

“Now, the feedback has been very positive. The light rail is considered reliable and comfortable. While buses may get bunched in traffic jams, the light rail runs punctually and regularly.”

According to Laitila, light rail line 15 made it clear that the light rail can be fast and comfortable – at its fastest, it reaches the same speeds as the metro.

“This is not a slow, traditional tram, but a modern connection that only stops where it’s supposed to. For many, it has been a new, positive experience.”

Light rail line 15 has also had a significant impact on regional development in Helsinki and Espoo. It has brought new bicycle paths, accelerated construction and changed the areas’ image.

“When looking at Maunula, Oulunkylä or Perkkaa, for example, you can see the change. The light rail raises the areas’ profile and attracts businesses and residents,” Laitila says.
