Vantaa basic education’s curriculum has three levels

Level 1

The Finnish National Board of Education decides on the goals of instruction and on the essential content by ratifying the grounds for the national curriculum (in Finnish).

Level 2

Vantaa's Finnish-language basic education curriculum (in Finnish) has been devised on the basis of the national curriculum. All of Vantaa’s Finnish-language elementary schools apply Vantaa’s curriculum. The curriculum consists of the goals, content, and assessment criteria of instruction in all of Vantaa’s elementary schools.

In addition to Vantaa’s curriculum for all schools, Vantaa's basic education has a separate:

Level 3

  • In addition, all of Vantaa’s Finnish-language basic education schools have a curriculum of their own, which supplements Vantaa schools’ joint curriculum. The schools’ own curricula do not specify the goals and content of instruction because they are the same for all of Vantaa’s Finnish-language elementary schools and can be browsed in Vantaa's Finnish-language basic education curriculum.

You can familiarize yourself with the schools’ own curricula here.(in Finnish)

Allocation of courses

Compliant with the Basic Education Act, instruction is given in specific subjects. The act also specifies the allocation of courses; in other words, how many lessons per week each subject is studied in each grade.

Vantaa's Finnish-language basic education has five allocations of courses.
