Preparatory teaching is provided for children and young people who are not proficient enough in Finnish language to study in a group taught in Finnish.

Preparatory teaching is provided for children and young people who are not proficient enough in Finnish language to study in a group taught in Finnish. The preparatory teaching groups teach the Finnish language as well as different school subjects based on the students' skills levels.

Preparatory teaching is offered only up to one year. The student will transition to groups taught in Finnish as early on as possible for subjects where they can get by with rudimentary language skills. When a stud…ent has adequate language skills, he or she can transition to basic education to a grade that suits their age and skill level.

In schools in Vantaa, preparatory teaching is arranged inclusively in a local school in the general education groups for 1st grade students and in separate groups for 2nd-9th grade students. 

Please contact the regional coordinator

Regional coordinators meet with the families that have immigrated into Finland and fill in the application together with the families, offering guidance in the matter. If your child requires preparatory teaching, please contact the regional coordinator and report the following:

  • name of the child, date of birth/personal identity number and mother tongue
  • address in Vantaa
  • the guardian’s name, telephone number and email address 

The regional coordinator will forward this information to the school receiving the child, which will then hold a welcome meeting. An interpreter will participate in the meeting if necessary.
