The city's joint events

Come and enjoy fairy-tale Christmas spirit at Håkansböle manor! The Christmas event at the manor takes place on Saturday, December 2, at 11:00-14:00, address: Kartanontie 1, 01200 Vantaa. The star of the event is ventriloquist Sari Aalto with her dolls. In addition, there are horse-driven carriages, Christmas sales, music, dancing, and Håkans’ delicacies.

True to tradition, Raising of the flag on Independence Day takes place on Wednesday, December 6, at 9:00, in front of City Hall (Asematie 7, 01300 Vantaa). Mayor Pekka Timonen will give a speech, and Vantaa Music Institute's brass band Vamos will accompany, among others, the Finnish national anthem. This time, the flag will be raised by Pyhän Laurin Ritarit scout group.

Multicultural Independence Day celebrates the independence of Finland, regardless of the participants’ backgrounds. The event takes place on Wednesday, December 6, at 14:00. The Kulttuuriseppä Prize—the City of Vantaa's acknowledgement of active promotion of multiculturalism and internationality—will also be awarded during the celebration, and those who gained Finnish citizenship this year will be accounted for. The artists include, among others, Irish Mark Hennessey (dance) and David Brennan (music); multilingual Rince Revontulet dance group; Ukrainian dance group Ethno Contemporary Ballet; as well as singer Yasmine Yamajako, famous for the Little Mermaid musical. The celebration is hosted by Vantaa comedian Mebe. Advance enrollment is required.

Christmas trip to Katrineberg manor leaves from the citizens' house closest to you on December 13. There will be bus transport from citizens' houses to the manor where the participants get to enjoy Christmas stories, Christmas delicacies, and being together. Enroll at your nearest citizens' house!

Senior afternoon at Vantaa City Museum (Hertaksentie 1, 01300 Vantaa) focuses on Christmas spirit on Wednesday, December 13, at 13:00-15:00. Past Christmases are reminisced, greetings on package cards are written with old-time fountain pens, and there will be mulled wine and bingo.

Shared Table’s Christmas workshop takes place on Thursday, December 14, at 12:00–14:00, address: Hosantie 2, ovi 5, 01360 Vantaa. The program includes musical performances and mayor Pekka Timonen’s greetings. Come and admire Christmas workshop's annual attraction – recycled Christmas tree. On offer will be Christmas porridge and mulled wine.

Christmas workshops

Fans of handicrafts are recommended to head toward Christmas card and Christmas decorations workshops.

Participants in Christmas card workshops make Christmas cards as part of the Joulupostia ikäihmisille (Christmas cards for the Elderly) campaign. The cards made in the workshops are delivered to elderly customers of Home Care and Housing Services. Christmas card workshops are arranged:

Participants in City Museum’s Christmas decorations workshop (Hertaksentie 1, 01300 Vantaa) make old-time Christmas decorations on Wednesday, November 30, at 15:00–18:00. The museum provides the materials. Admission free.

Citizens' houses’ Christmas events

  • Tikkurila citizens' house (Lummetie 2A, 4th floor, 01300 Vantaa) offers a porridge party on December 1, at 10:00–13:00. You can dance to the tune of Christmas hits in groups on Thursday, December 14, at 10:00. The moves are easy, fun, and everybody can learn them. The guided dance lesson is suitable for everybody, especially those who do not think they can dance.
  • Länsimäki citizens' house (Kilpakuja 1, 01280 Vantaa) throws a Christmas party on December 12, at 17:00–19:00.
  • Myyrmäki citizens' house (Myyrmäkitalo, Paalutori 3, 01600 Vantaa) offers Christmas porridge on Wednesday, December 13, at 10:00–11:00.
  • Christmas trip to Katrineberg manor on Wednesday, December 13. There will be bus transport from citizens' houses to the manor where the participants get to enjoy Christmas stories, Christmas delicacies, and being together. Enroll at your nearest citizens' house!
  • Korso citizens' house (Korsontie 2, 01450 Vantaa) arranges a Christmas event on Friday, December 15, at 9:30–12:30. Mayor Pekka Timonen will be presenting his Christmas greetings at the event. Other performers at the event are Korso's women's choir NaisSounds and Timo Lyytinen. There will also be Christmassy snacks and mulled wine.

Music and theater

Joulupukki ja kadonnut kartta (“Santa Claus and the lost map”) story concerts invite children to enjoy Christmas songs at the library. Rotating Children’s Art Center Kattila’s free concerts take place on:

  • Friday, December 8, at 10:00 and 14:00, Tikkurila library (Lummetie 4, 01300 Vantaa)
  • Monday, December 18, at 10:00, Lumo library (Urpiaisentie 14, 01450 Vantaa)
  • Monday, December 18, at 14:00, Point library (Hagelstamintie 1, 01520 Vantaa)
  • Tuesday, December 19, at 10:00, Hakunila library (Kimokuja 5, 01200 Vantaa)
  • Tuesday, December 19, at 14:00, Mosaiikki library (Vantaankoskentie 69, 01700 Vantaa)

Puppet theatre Sampo's Yllätyslahja ystävälle (“A surprise gift for a friend”) performance is shown in Children’s Art Center Pessi,  (Vernissakatu 4, 01300 Vantaa) on Thursday, November 30, at 10:00. The performance describes the Christmas and friendship of animals. A little bunny's travel through a winter forest brings Christmassy thoughts to the minds of spectators. The wonderful, warm story is suitable for people of all ages, also for the youngest members of the family. Duration: 35 minutes, tickets: €12/person.

Children’s Art Center Pessi (Vernissakatu 4, 01300 Vantaa) arranges Christmas-theme art mornings as well as Children's Saturday. The free-of-charge art mornings are meant for children aged 0 - 6 years, accompanied by a grown-up.

•    Christmas gnome's Christmas preparations visual arts workshop on Friday, December 1, at 9:30 and 10:30

•    Christmas music on Friday, December 8, at 9:30 and 10:30

•    Children's Satuday on December 9, at 9:00–12:00. The program includes a snowflake workshop and Kisu Pikulainen and the miracle of Christmas performance.

•    Russian-language Christmas gnome workshop (Мастерская гномов) on Tuesday, December 12, at 9:30. Children’s Art Center Musikantit’s happy gnomes invite you to sing and make your own Christmas tree decoration. The event is free of charge, but advance enrollment is required. Language: Russian. Rakastettu Lumiukko (“Beloved Snowman”) movie concert takes place on Saturday, December  9, at 16:00, at Kulttuuritalo Martinus (Martinlaaksontie 36, 01620 Vantaa). Vantaa Pops Orchestra accompanies on the spot the classic Christmas movie.

The stars of the Hiljaa Jouluyössä concert are the current tango king and queen Pasi Flodström and Charlotta Saari. The concert—at Kulttuuritalo Martinus (Martinlaaksontie 36, 01620 Vantaa) on Saturday, December 16, at 19:00—includes favorite Christmas carols sung by both the audience and the performers.

Vantaa Music Institute's Laurus Kamarikuoroperforms at Tikkurila church (Asematie 12, 01300 Vantaa) on Tuesday, December 12, at 19:00, at Joulun taikaa (“The Magic of Christmas”) concert. The conductor is Heidi Harinen. Admission free. 

Vantaa Music Institute's Soivat Joulumarkkinat is a market event targeted at families, at Kulttuurikeskus Orvokki on Saturday, December 9, at 12:00–15:00. The event consists of musical performances, singing Christmas carols together, sales, and café. On the yard, you can enjoy sausages and hot mulled wine.
