Rock excavation works begin at Tikkurila station

According to current plans, night-time rock excavation works will begin near Tikkurila station during the week starting 10 August. The exact location is beneath tracks 5 and 6 at Tikkurila station. All tracks at the station were moved onto temporary bridges last year, and construction of the light rail is currently taking place underneath them. Tikkurila station and all services in the area will remain open throughout the construction period.

Blasting will also take place at night, as the works must be carried out around railway operations and train traffic on the main line is lighter at night. The works will cause intermittent noise. Noisy activities include rock drilling, blasting and moving excavated rock. According to current plans, the night-time excavation works will last 2–3 weeks. After that, excavation will continue during the autumn within the normal hours for noisy work: weekdays from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., and for justified reasons until 8 p.m.

Night-time blasting will take place within the following time windows: 22:36–22:42, 00:31–00:41 and 03:30–04:00. In addition, on Saturdays and Sundays, blasting may also take place between 05:26 and 05:41. We apologise for any inconvenience. Earplugs are available from Tikkurila Library during its opening hours. The works have been commissioned by the City of Vantaa and are carried out by Destia.

We always ensure the safety of the surrounding area before blasting. Upcoming blasts are announced with an intermittent warning siren sounding 10–120 seconds in advance. After blasting, a continuous 3–10 second siren indicates that the blast is complete. The siren can be heard in the area around the worksite. Based on our experience, excavation works have not caused pest problems, but in exceptional situations animals such as rats may move to new areas. We therefore recommend keeping waste container lids closed and the surrounding area tidy.
