Montessori teaching
Introduction
The Montessori classes in Vantaa for grades 1–6 are available in Kuusikko School. Vantaa does not provide Montessori teaching for grades 7–9.
The curriculum of Montessori teaching follows the basic curriculums of the Kuusikko School, the City of Vantaa and the national basic education. This also applies to learning assessments.
Students to Montessori classes are primarily elected among children living in Vantaa. Students for the Montessori class will be mainly elected from among the incoming 1st grade students who have attended Montessori education in day care or in pre-primary education. The students accepted into Montessori class from the other grades are required to have a Montessori background from their previous school. Accepting students in Montessori classes is counted as secondary student admission

The teaching method of Montessori classes is based on pedagogics developed by an Italian doctor, Maria Montessori. The Montessori method has no religious or philosophical background but is rather based on Dr. Montessori’s observations of a child’s development and sensitive periods. She believed that every child has the will to learn and that a child could focus on work that felt meaningful to them even several hours at a time, as long as they were allowed to follow their own schedule and choose their own assignments. The child is guided to work independently based on their individual prerequisites and he or she will learn to take responsibility for his or her own learning at an early stage.
Montessori teaching is based on entities, and the subjects are not usually separated. Montessori classes are joint classes where students of different ages study together. The functional teaching material allows for the learner’s individualised and unhurried progress. This working method strengthens the sense of community and helps the student grow into an active member of their group. An ecological view of the world and a person’s place in it that values life has been established as the framework of the studies. Exploring, making by hand, creative problem-solving, insightful learning and considering the cause and effect are all key parts of the learning process.
