Almost 3,000 name suggestions were submitted for the name contest. The participants could choose from pre-selected options or suggest a name of their own. Of the pre-selected options given in the contest, Tikkurila Competence Campus won the most votes and was also the city executive board’s favourite. As a result, the future name in its entirety will be Tikkurilan osaamiskampus in Finnish, Dickursby kompetenscampus in Swedish, and Tikkurila Competence Campus in English.
The open answers and arguments that were written in the name contest showed that the name was hoped to be connected with the area, as well as concisely indicate the nature of its operations. Both Finnish-language and English-language names were favored.
– The name is connected with a familiar area in Vantaa and tells about the goals of the campus, since the campus area aims to develop competence, to bring experts and businesses together, and to engage in extensive cooperation with different actors. In addition to the concept of cooperation between different educational levels and involvement of higher education institutions, the campus also includes the idea of a broader entity of built environment and joint operation, tells Katri Kalske, acting mayor of the city of Vantaa.
The working group that analyzed the results of the contest and the city executive board faced a difficult task, since other, personal and well-argued suggestions were also submitted. Suggestions describing the area's activities consisted of, among others, Tilaakso, Dixford, Thinkkurila, and Innokampus. Examples of suggestions related to the environment were, for instance, Jokikampus and Raide. There were several short and concise Finnish-language suggestions, such as Oiva, Aatos, and LuoVa. International name suggestions consisted of, among others, Campus Creative and Vantaa Center of Expertise. Cha Cha Champus and Käärijä-kampus were also among the suggested names!
The campus area that will provide a collaborative platform for developing competencies for working life and innovation will be built in Tikkurila’s Jokiniemi around 2024-2028. In addition, the campus will offer local services, business and office premises, as well as housing. In the beginning, the campus project’s working title was Vantaan oppimiskampus (“Vantaa's learning campus”). As construction will start soon, it was time to look for a permanent name for area. The City of Vantaa launched the name contest in May 2023, inviting Vantaa residents and everybody else interested in the matter to influence the future name of the area. The participants could suggest a name of their own or choose from five pre-selected options.
The participants had the chance of participating in a lottery with Vantaa-themed surprise prizes and a 4-person festival ticket package for the Tikkurila Festival. The winners of the lottery will be contacted. Thanks to everybody who submitted their proposals!
