General Information

We place the students in classes according to the child’s year of birth. Children who turn 7 in the calendar year will start first grade in August. If the child turns seven in 2021, he/she will start school in August 2021.

Primarily we accept applicants who live in Vantaa. Applicants from other municipalities may be accepted after children from Vantaa, should there be spaces in the existing learning groups.

We have a maximum number of students per grade level. This decision has been made by the Vantaa board of Education and therefore we cannot exceed this maximum number.

Curriculum
We follow the Finnish curriculum and the language of instruction is English. The students study Finnish starting from 1st grade and from 6th grade onwards they also study Swedish. We teach Finnish as a mother tongue as well as Finnish as a second language.

Classes
The classes are filled according to the results of the entrance exam, giving priority to applicants from Vantaa. Should there be students with the same amount of points and not enough space in the classes, the selection is done with an official draw.

School fees
There are no school fees: school books and other education materials as well as school meals are free of charge.

Transport to school
The guardians are responsible for the transportation to school.

Afternoon Club
The Afternoon Club is for 1st and 2nd grade students. Activities are organized both before and after school hours. For further information, please search for “Aamu- ja iltapäivätoiminta Vantaalla”.

Preschool

How to apply - please read carefully

The same form is used to apply for the English classes from 1st to 9th grades in the International School of Vantaa and from 1st to 6th grades in Kaivoksela School and Rekolanmäki School.

The entrance exam of the International School of Vantaa for grades 1-9 can only be taken in English because English language skills are required to study in the International School of Vantaa.

Kaivoksela School and Rekolanmäki School have English classes from grades 1-6. The students are chosen to the English 1st grade through a Language Readiness Test, but the children do not have to have skills in English before school begins. The test can be done in Finnish or in English. If your child is applying to both schools, the test is done in one school.

Should the student apply to several schools, they have to participate in the language proficiency tests of the schools for which they are applying.

Applicants can be approved to study in one school only. Should a student not get their first choice school, they will be an equal applicant in the selection of their second and third school choice as per their school selection listing.
