Student Counseling
Students in Grades 4-9 are offered a wide range of elective subjects to choose from. Courses are offered in both the artistic and practical subjects (Home Economics, Music, Art, Crafts and Physical Education) as well as in other subjects, varying from Robotics to Film History to Philosophy, to name a few. We also offer Spanish, French and German as elective subjects. The courses on offer varies slightly from year to year. You can view our currently offered elective subjects on our Electives Site.
At ISV
Everyone studies English and Finnish from 1st Grade.
French, Spanish, Swedish and German are offered as electives starting grade 4.
Swedish instruction begins in grade 6 as a compulsory course.
Instruction in a student’s own native language aims to support the student’s own thinking, their language skills, and communication. Native-language teaching creates the foundation for functional bilingualism and strengthens the student’s multicultural identity. This instruction also supports the learning of other subjects.
In Vantaa, we offer instruction in about 30 different native languages or secondary languages. Native-language language teaching is supplemental instruction in addition to the student’s basic number of lessons, and we aim to provide this instruction for two lessons a week.
