The Vantaa City Council ratified the revised project plan for the Vantaa light rail on November 17, 2025. In connection with this, the Council gave the Vantaa light rail alliance a mandate to plan the light rail up to the airport in cooperation with the airport company Finavia. The now-completed plan includes the location of the proposed terminus and the related arrangements, as well as an estimate of the costs. A decision on the placement of the airport terminus will be made by the end of 2027.

“The airport is a key hub for Vantaa, and the Vantaa light rail route up to Terminaalitie in the core area of the airport will connect it even more closely to the unified, developing light rail city.  With the light rail, the accessibility of the airport will improve significantly not only for tourists, but also for the area’s workers and visitors. The light rail will especially increase the vitality and attractiveness of the airport area and Aviapolis – which together comprise the second largest workplace hub in Finland – by connecting the airport and Aviapolis to each other more seamlessly than before,” says Tero Anttila, Deputy Mayor of the Urban Environment Department from the City of Vantaa.

“The development of the airport area is based on good accessibility and a functional network of various modes of transport. The Vantaa light rail will support the long-term development of the Helsinki-Vantaa Airport area and strengthen its position as a significant workplace and business hub. The proposed location of the light rail's terminus on Terminaalitie is central to the airport's operations and also supports the airport area’s future development into a more closely connected airport center. The light rail will especially improve the everyday travel opportunities of about 20,000 people working at the airport and in its nearby areas, but it will also serve the area's customers, visitors and tourists,” says Ulla Serlenius, Senior Vice President of Commercial and Real Estate Development at Finavia.

Finavia owns the Helsinki-Vantaa airport buildings, the properties in their immediate vicinity and the land areas near the airport.
