After school activities in basic education

Schools arrange subject to a charge after-school activities for 1st-2nd grade students, as well as for students in other grades who have decision on support.

Introduction

After-school activities are intended for students in grades 1 and 2, as well as for students in other grades whose decision on support specifies:
-instruction by a special needs teacher or special class teacher in a small group or
-instruction by a special class teacher in a special-education class.

The city coordinates the activities, while the clubs are maintained by private actors, the congregation, as well as organizations and associations. After-school clubs mainly operate on schools' a
nd congregations' premises.

Apply for after-school activities online on April. Before and after-school activities will be arranged during the school year. They will not be provided during holiday seasons or on exceptional school days or on Saturdays.

Operating hours

After school activities will be arranged during the school year. The activities will not be provided during holiday seasons or on exceptional school days or on Saturdays.

After school activities operate daily from 12:00–16:00 or 12:00 to 17:00. The family shall choose in the service agreement the desired operating hours for the entire school year.

The organizers of the after school activities are entitled to have two staff training days per school year, on which day the operating unit is closed. The guardians will be informed of the staff training day at least two weeks in advance.

There are a total of 54 after school activity units in Vantaa with around 2600 children attending them.

Apply for after school activities via online Wilma service

Application period for the school year 2026-2027 is March 26, 2026 - April 30, 2026. Soon-to-be 1st and 2nd graders and older students receiving student-specific support in a small group or a special-education class, who submitted their applications during the application period and who are without a guardian at home after school, will receive a place in the after school activities beginning in the next school year.

You can also apply for after school activities throughout the year, but in this case, we cannot guarantee that all applicants receive a place in after school activities.

After school activities’ customer fees and payment relief

After school activities are subject to a charge. The guardians are charged a fixed monthly fee.

A daily snack is included in the customer fee. Everyone is also insured in case of an accident.

Cancelling a place in after school activities

The place in the after school activities can be terminated following the notice period.

The organizer of the after school activities and the guardian will make a service agreement before the child starts the activities.

Child information form instructions

This only applies to the after school activity units at Hämeenkylän koulu, Kaivokselan koulu and Kuusikon koulu, where the City of Vantaa acts as the organizer.

The guardian will be sent a link to the electronic Child information form after the child has received a place in after school activities at Hämeenkylän koulu, Kaivokselan koulu or Kuusikon koulu. The guardian will fill in the form before the activity starts.
