Several trade unions have announced political demonstrations in Uusimaa on Thursday 14 December. The strikes will affect the services provided by the City of Vantaa.
Impact of the strike on sports and leisure services
On Thursday they are open according to the allocated shifts:
- The sports facilities of the Koivukylä centre for the elderly will be open on the following days.
- Sports facilities at the Hakunila rock shelter
- Rajakylä tennis centre
- Hämeenkylä sports hall.
Leisure shifts granted in schools, educational establishments and day-care centres are also valid in those premises where self-access is applied. This refers to schools and day nurseries where the users of the premises are given a key and there is no evening supervisor.
The shifts allocated to the premises of schools, colleges and day care centres subject to evening supervision may be subject to staff availability.
The following are closed
- swimming pools and fitness centres attached to swimming pools
- ice rinks
- artificial ice
- Lumo sports facilities (including classrooms managed by the sports services)
- sports facilities at the Rajatorppa rock shelter
- sports halls
- other sports facilities that require staff to be on duty.
The shifts allocated to the premises have been cancelled.
Guided group exercise for special groups, working age people and seniors organised by the Sports Services Department has been cancelled on Thursday 14 December.
On Thursday, it will be possible to take part in winter sports. The snow conditions are excellent, so on Thursday you may want to head for the ski trails, outdoor skating or even the sledding hill. You can enjoy the fresh winter weather at the same time.

The impact of the strike on pupils and students in schools
The strike will affect pupils and students who take the bus, train, tram or metro to school. There will be no substitute transport to schools and educational institutions. School taxis will most likely run as normal.
The strike will also impact Vantaan Tilapalvelut Vantti. Vantti delivers, for instance, meal services to educational institutions and daycare centers in Vantaa. It will impact meals in most of Vantaa’s educational institutions and daycare centers.
Travel to basic schools
School work will be arranged in the normal manner despite the strike. The school will inform the family if there are slight changes to the child’s schedule due to the strike.
If you bring your child to school by car during the possible strike, please take special care to ensure safety in the school yard and the surrounding area.
If your child has to stay at home due to a transport problem, you must submit an absence notification.
Travel to general upper secondary schools and Varia
In upper secondary education, students are generally expected to come to the educational institution. If some of the students are unable to be present due to the strike, the teacher may open a remote connection during the lesson, if possible. The principals will inform school based about the practical arrangements for Thursday.
Vocational students in on-the-job learning agree on arrangements separately with the on-the-job learning place.
Travel to daycare centers
Early childhood education will be arranged in the normal manner despite the strike. If your child is absent, please notify the daycare centre in accordance with normal practice.
School and daycare center meals
On Thursday the 14th of December 2023, we will primarily replace school and daycare center meals with backup food. The backup food package includes snacks such as biscuits, smoothies, juice soup and crisp bread. Unfortunately, we cannot account for special diets on Thursday. People with special diets or food needs, we kindly ask you to prepare and bring your own snacks. Please note that the day care centers can not accept snacks other than those due to a special diet.
Because of the exceptional day, there will be menu changes in the coming days as well.
Vantti will provide ordinary meals in units where it is possible. In the educational institutions and daycare centers to which Palmia delivers food, food is available as normally.
